Jeffrey Schindler joins the Long Beach Symphony on harpsichord for Händel’s Water Music (yes—bring your sea legs)

"Handel and George I" by Edouard-Jean-Conrad Hamman (1819-1888)

Jeffrey Schindler climbs aboard (figuratively—no splashing on stage, please) as harpsichordist in the continuo section with the Long Beach Symphony for George Frideric Händel’s Water Music—music that started life as an outdoor spectacle and somehow still feels like a celebration every time it’s played.

The backstory is as vivid as the title suggests: Water Music was written for a royal outing on the River Thames, with musicians performing from a barge as King George I and guests traveled alongside on the water. In other words, it’s literally party music with boats—and in this concert, we get to hear that same “buoyant” spirit, just with better lighting and significantly drier seating.

So yes: umbrella and galoshes are optional. A sense of occasion is not.
